Little Venice

Baku is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, located at the junction of Europe and Asia. It has a rich history, unique ancient and modern architecture. There are many monuments of antiquity – fortresses, palaces, caravanserais, mosques. In the early twentieth century, this city received a beautiful definition of “Eastern Paris”. The current innovations have made Baku look like Dubai. But that is not all! This city also has its Venice!

This is highly interesting place, a mini town, or even a cozy paradise. It’s so incredibly glorious and fabulous that you will be beckoned there as soon as you look at the pictures. This is a restaurant called “Little Venice”. It is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea, the territory of the Primorsky National Park, on the Primorsky Boulevard of the Azerbaijani capital. In 1960, at the very edge of the Baku boulevard, the city authorities built an amazing complex of canals and islands. It had no name, but the residents began to call it “Venice of Baku”. The system of channels appeared thanks to the efforts of the head of the city in those years. In the 50’s, he visited Venice and admired the city on the water very much. He returned from the trip full of determination to implement such a bold project of creation a “Little Venice” in Baku.

And here it is! The total length of the canals of the “Little Venice” is 1,350 meters, the depth is 1,3 meters, and 7,000 cubic meters of water are required for filling them. The whole territory, where three large islands and several small islets with trees are comfortably spread out, occupies an area of 10 thousand square meters.

You can stroll through the blue waves of canals on the gondolas (specially brought to Baku from Italy), hitting the atmosphere of comfort and fairy tale. Extremely pure sky blue water surprises and pleases. The canal water is purified using a special water purification system. Here you may walk along the touching bridges, sit in the teahouse or taste lyulya-kebab in a restaurant among the canals and lush vegetation. One of the restaurants offers Western cuisine, and the other – the Eastern one.

A romantic atmosphere also attracts couples and newlyweds. Graceful fountains, tunnels and bridges create pretty backdrops for photographs of wedding albums, and massive structures of marble and concrete, that are obviously imitating Venetian palaces, add some kind of magic.
