Diamonds after death
Have you ever heard of the memorial diamonds? You literally can leave a diamond after death, and it’s not a joke! Such an original way to process human remains was discovered more than a decade ago. Creation of the first laboratory can be attributed to the 1950s, the technology itself has been patented by the company Life Gem diamonds in 1999 and presented to the public in 2002.
The service of processing human ashes into diamonds is gaining momentum. It is becoming increasingly popular, especially in the US, Japan and Europe. Several dozens of companies produce diamonds from human ashes today. To be more precise, the material which was initially required for the manufacture of the memorial diamond was ash after the cremation, and now a lock of hair of the deceased is enough for this purpose. Moreover, the progress goes on and the most incredible ideas are born in the process! You can perpetuate not only your dead relatives and loved ones in such a way, but also your pets.
The process of creating such precious stones is almost identical to the creation of synthetic diamonds, but instead of the conventional carbon or ash for the base of the future stone, skillful craftsmen use the ashes of the deceased person. How does this happen? Jewels are created under the same conditions as the natural diamond but by the artificial means. Initially, the ash should be prepared. Then, cleaned and processed, it is placed into a special chamber, where for several weeks it is exposed to high pressure and temperature. This occurs as long as it doesn’t crystallize into the diamonds. After the traditional faceting, due to your personal order, the diamond can be inserted into a ring, pendant or any other piece of jewelry. You can get several dozen stones from the remains of a single person. Depending on the desired color and the final size of the diamond its price may vary from 5 to 25 thousand dollars. These cremation diamonds are no different from the real – shine and glitter – everything is perfect! Gemological Institute of America has officially confirmed it.
You can order the color of diamonds in advance. It can vary from colorless to deep blue, red or green, or rely on a random one. Interesting fact. The founder of the Swiss company «Algordanza» Rinaldo Willy says that very often the color of stones exactly matches the color of eyes of the deceased person. It’s an amazing phenomenon that doesn’t have any scientific explanation.
The ethical side of the issue certainly raises many questions and disputes. Do you think whether it is blasphemous to the memory of the dead? Would you wear a ring with your great-grandmother on your finger? Clients, satisfied with their acquisition, declare that the memorial diamonds help them to easily transfer the bitterness of loss. However, you will not have confidence that this is your relative or a beloved person, because there is no way to conduct DNA examination of the memorial diamonds and prove their origin.
